The names are random, even a mash of first names / last names or a usename generator, which as you point out is also quite random. But for generating unique names it has to be.
If username / permalink update doesn't work for you, send me more details please (and confirm your permanlink doesn't exist) Please, read through this post and submit your issue accordingly.
