how do I do <this> search / custom search information / search info

Post by martin@rootjazz » Fri Nov 16, 2018 2:32 pm

Often get questions asking how to perform <this> search. The answer is always CUSTOM SEARCH. It can do any search you can think of.

The latest question.

How do I like the most recent 2-3 posts of each of my followers.

Answer: CUSTOM SEARCH :)

There is a tutorial on custom search, pt #8 in the GETTING STARTED SERIES

Custom Search Tutorial Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FJLhHo ... lw&index=6

Explains how to build ANY search and specify how many results per step (optional)

It is worth understanding this function as it is very powerful and not that complicated once you have your head around.

Basically, you select searches from the left and build a search on the right.

So for example above (like 2-3 images of each of my followers) simply select
FOLLOWERS_OF
RECENT IMAGES (2)

The scrape above means:
Scrape my followers
then take the results from above and feed it into the below
Userfeed (2)

so you scrape the USEFEED from each of your followers. The (2) means, only scrape 2 results for this step. To set this. Once selected (on the right side) double click on USERFEED and specify how many images you want per profile (2). Then you will like two medias from each profile, if you want to like 3 images, specify 3, if 1, select 1 etc

Now depending on your followers, there could be issues with liking too many, lets say you have 5000 followers, so 2 images from each is 10,000. That is a lot to like in one go. So you can limit it to the most recent 400 followers and 2 images from each of those = 800.

FOLLOWERS(400)
USERFEED(2)

Let say you did want to like 2 images from each and every of your followers, which would be too many to do in a single action. Remember, each time an action repeats, the search is run again, so this could be lots of duplicate searchs.

Another way to do this, is to go to the SCRAPER TAB

run the above scrape
FOLLOWERS(x)
USERFEED(2)

where (x) is the total of followers to scrape. This will save to a file images from all your followers (the path will be shown in the logs, the file will be saved to your SAVE DIRECTORY, open via HELP > SAVE DIRECTORY

You can then use this saved file (path shown in logs), on the LIKE tab with the search dropdown option FILEPATH OF IMAGES.

This will allow the action to run on a repeater, going through the file until all are completed. This method is preferable than doing a repeat action with a search, as the search will run each time the action repeats and you may scrape the same followers (only the last step is checked to be unique). So if you want to go through them all and only 2 of each, go with the SCRAPE TAB to file, then like from file.

Thanks Martin, great post. I didn't think about keeping them in files like that.

So IG keeps the followers in order of followers from recent to oldest! Good to know!

Actually no, not any more. Bad use of the term "recent". I meant the first 400 followers ISG returns from the search.

Nice detailed explanation of using Custom Search.

Multi Search can do multiple Custom Searchs in one go as well.
